Here is what we do

We want to assist you with your buildings, how they should be built and how they should perform.   We have extensive experience in the energy efficiency and sustainability world.

Energy Code Compliance

Lewellen Associates, LLC,  has been hands on the Washington State energy code since its inception.  We provide technical assistance to  consulting engineers, architects, HVAC designers  and jurisdictional code enforcement staff.  We help people fill out the forms to be submitted with the building permit application.  As such,  Lewellen Associates is the on-call technical assistant for email and phone questions. Today he is a one of the team members who are bringing the energy code into the 21st century with the creation of a fully interactive web site that will help users obtain compliance with the Non-Residential Energy Code.

Lewellen Associates also provides Energy Code Training to alert users of the updates to the code that happens every 3 years.  We offer many types of resources and can tailor the training to your specifications:high level overview, in-depth, single subject,  in person, on line, or one on one.

Training

Lewellen Associates can provide your company or association training in Energy Code Updates, the Code as it applies to your company or industry, or just an overview.  Duane is Lead Instructor for the Building Operator Certification, a international program that that teaches best practices in running a building or campus energy efficiently.  Both Carol and Duane have taught Energy Management at college level for many years, and can write and teach curriculum that matches your needs for specialized topics in your energy sector. We are also familiar with Blackboard and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). We would enjoy talking to you about it.

Energy Engineering

Lewellen Associates is known for its energy engineering.  We have been analyzing how buildings have used energy since 1978 in both the residential and commercial field.  Because of that, we offer you a multidisciplinary approach to your project. We perform ASHRE Level 1-3 audits to assess where the energy hogs are and consult on what is the appropriate system for clients to get the best return on the investment. We use the latest software program to perform load calculations if required for the job.

We perform Building Commissioning on all buildings, no matter how complex or simple they are.  We will review the proposed engineering design and provide documents that show how the systems are functioning prior to occupancy. We climb up on the roof, and go down in the basement to check out the installation as well as the functionality of the equipment installed.  If there is a problem noted, we alert all parties involved as to what was noted and then after the resolution we return to confirm that the equipment is now functioning correctly. We also perform Retro-commissioning to ensure that your building systems are still running as they were designed to. We also make recommendations if we see equipment has come to the end of its useful life.

We also can provide contract/project management from the very beginning to make sure everything will run smoothly. Lewellen Associates confirms that your equipment and building materials meet the specifications before it is covered up. The helps keep costs down and timelines adhered to.

Strategic Energy Management

Every day, with costs of things increasing, savvy business people don’t just look at their building when they get the keys and say “Well, I’m done with that. Do your thing building.” That approach won’t work for a very long life for an investment.  That is why Lewellen Associates believe every site, whether it is a single building or a huge campus of buildings needs a plan that includes best practices for operations and maintenance, but also key performance indicators (KPI) that alarm when the building strays from its set parameters. This is where a Strategic Energy Management plan comes in.

An SEMp is a set of processes like goal setting, tracking of energy use and a reporting mechanism that helps an organization to implement energy management actions and consistently achieve energy performance improvements. The benefit of effective planning ensures continuous improvement of energy efficiency and increases the property value of buildings This plan can point out processes and systems needed to incorporate energy considerations and energy management into daily operations. One item in a SEP is benchmarking, a key component of strategic energy management. Tracking and monitoring building energy and asset information is an integrated element of data-driven energy management.  A successful strategic energy management plan builds long-term relationships with energy users and targets persistent energy savings.  For public buildings, strategic energy management reduces costs across many end uses, institutionalizes practices to sustain long-term savings, and can serve as a model for the private sector.
